Swallows
SPACE
Swallows Topic Blurb – Autumn 2: Space
This half term, Swallows are blasting off into Space! We’ll be learning all about the planets, the moon, and what it’s like to be an astronaut. Through stories, songs, and hands-on activities, children will explore the wonders of our solar system and beyond.
English: We’ll read exciting space stories like *There Was an Old Martian Who Swallowed the Moon* and *The Way Back Home* by Oliver Jeffers. We’ll build sentences, learn new space words, and write about aliens, rockets, and the stars!
Maths: We’ll be adding, subtracting, and counting forwards and backwards — using practical objects, pictures, and even planets to help us solve number problems.
Science: Children will explore the Moon’s phases using Oreo cookies, discover why we have day and night, and learn amazing facts about the planets through songs and videos.
Art & Design: We’ll create night sky paintings, space mark-making pictures, and junk model rockets, using glitter, paint, and imagination to make our art truly out of this world!
RE: We’ll explore the story of Christmas and the light of the star, learning how light brings hope and joy.
PSHE: We’ll keep using the Zones of Regulation to recognise our feelings and learn calming strategies, helping us work and play kindly together.
PE: Our PE sessions will focus on jumping, landing, and dance, helping us move confidently like floating astronauts in space.
Cooking: We’ll make space-themed snacks like fruit rockets, star sandwiches, and Oreo moon phases — delicious and fun!
Computing: We’ll use Purple Mash to create pictograms and graphs, learning how to sort and count data about our favourite things.
It’s going to be a half term full of fun, creativity, and discovery as we reach for the stars and explore the universe together!
