Our Reading Intent

Reading at George Carey is at the heart of our curriculum, and we encourage reading from an early age with picture books and lots of discussion.

We want you to learn to read so that you can read to learn.

We are committed to fostering a love of reading across the school. We believe that reading is key to unlocking potential and developing lifelong learners. Our reading curriculum is designed to ensure that all children develop strong reading skills and are exposed to a rich variety of texts.

We aim for all of our pupils to:

  • Read fluently and with good understanding

  • Develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information

  • Acquire a wide vocabulary

  • Appreciate our heritage

  • Use discussion in order to learn, elaborate and explain clearly our understanding and ideas

“Without language, one cannot talk to people and understand them; one cannot share their hopes and aspirations, grasp their history, appreciate their poetry, or savour their songs.” Nelson Mandela.
