Reading Motivation

Reading at George Carey is at the heart of our curriculum, and we encourage reading from an early age with picture books and lots of discussion.

We want you to learn to read so that you can read to learn.

We use DEAR (Drop everything and read) to allow to children to forget their normal tasks and drift away with a good book.

We aim for all of our pupils to:

  • Read fluently and with good understanding

  • Develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information

  • Acquire a wide vocabulary

  • Appreciate our heritage

  • Use discussion in order to learn, elaborate and explain clearly our understanding and ideas

Children should be motivated to read a wide range of books, texts, mediums and genres which could be comics, ebooks, audiobooks, online articles, magazines, signs, Holy books and so much more!

“Without language, one cannot talk to people and understand them; one cannot share their hopes and aspirations, grasp their history, appreciate their poetry, or savour their songs.” Nelson Mandela.
