Curriculum Information

Vocabulary, grammar and spoken language at George Carey.

Our aim is for all children to become confident communicators who are able to interact in a variety of social situations.


Spoken Language at George Carey


Early Years


  • The children follow a curriculum which focuses upon the key communication skills of speaking, listening and understanding. This is reinforced through a love of story which in turn leads to the development of enriched vocabulary.

  • In the Early Years children learn to speak familiar stories and rhymes which lay the foundations for creative writing. We believe that if a child cannot say it they cannot write it.


KS1 / KS2


  • George Carey has introduced Pie Corbett ‘Talk for Writing’ which is supporting a spoken language curriculum aimed to develop confident speakers through the oral recital of well known stories, poems and information texts / models.

  • Within each unit taught children are given opportunities to articulate their thought processes clearly, culminating in the ability to take part in activities such as debates, poetry recitals and critical group discussions.

  • Vocabulary including topic specific vocabulary e.g. scientific language – is expanded and developed in every lesson throughout the school.


Reading at George Carey


Early Years

  • In the nursery the children will have access to a mobile library.

  • They will have opportunities to share their library book with parent/carers at school and home.

  • In EYFS the children are encouraged to read and re-read a wide variety of traditional stories, nursery rhymes and information books.

  • When the children start to learn phonics, they may take home a phonetically decodable reading for them to practise their phase 2 skills.


KS1 / KS2

  • Every week the children take home new reading books that are at an appropriate reading level. This to support both their word and comprehension understanding/development.

  • Each book in our school has been given a coloured band. The banding system follows a national book band scheme. Books are given a specific colour band according to their level and word count. Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you have any questions or concerns about reading. The following link has more information abouit reading for parents:

  • They also have access to e-books to supplement and enrich home reading (see Bug Club below).

  • Every week KS1 and KS2 visits their respective libraries and choose from a wide range of poetry, fiction and non-fiction books, suitable for their age and interest levels.

  • In KS1 guided reading takes place weekly – an opportunity for the children to learn and practise their reading skills. Teachers set appropriate targets and assess the children’s reading progress throughout the small guided group reading session.

  • In KS2 the children participate in Reciprocal Reading sessions. Concepts, themes and a detailed understanding of the text are discussed together to produce a comprehensive understanding required by the National Curriculum. Children are encourage to debate their thoughts and understanding with close reference to the text.

  • George Carey prides itself in making sure that the children read every day in a variety of ways with a wide range of literature. Some of these ways include: peer reading, individual reading to an adult, shared reading, reading to audiences, poetry recitals, independent reading and outdoor reading.

  • Children will learn to recite a poem every half term, giving them confidence to perform in front of a wider audience.


Bug Club

  • George Carey Primary School subscribes to a reading programme called The Bug Club; a reading programme that allows children to read and interact with a huge range of e-books using the school computers.

  • All children at George Carey are able to access the e-books at home. All they need is a computer, laptop, smartphone etc. and access to the internet. This could be at home, at their grandparents’, at a friend’s home or even at the local library. Every Child has been given a login card; on it will be their username and password to access their ‘virtual’ book-bag. When you first access ‘Bug Club’ you will need to enter the ‘School ID’. Our school ID is: s6qp

  • The children really enjoy the books. The software enables each child to access a number of e-books on the computer carefully selected by the class teacher. Children are able to read books onscreen and can complete fun comprehension questions found in the e-Books.

  • If you experience any problems with Bug Club please see your child’s class teacher and we will endeavor to resolve the problem.

Spelling at George Carey


Early Years

  • Children in Early Years learn to spell in a phonetic way, alongside the phonetic development of reading. Please see below for a more detailed look at phonics.

  • In Early Years we provide an environment rich in vocabulary to the support the children to spell words correctly in a fun and imaginative way.


  • Children are taught to spell in a phonetic way, continued on from the foundations laid in Early Years. Please see below information on how phonetics is taught.

  • Children learn the statutory spellings detailed in the National Curriculum – some are exception words which do not have a direct phonetic link.


  • Children learn the words detailed in the National Curriculum.

  • We encourage children to become confident word detectives; able to identify key features, including patterns, origins, prefixes, suffixes etc.


Writing at George Carey


At George Carey we teach through an approach advocated by Pie Corbett, a well established and celebrated  teacher renowned for developing ‘Talk for Writing’. It is a unique approach by which children are exposed to quality texts to learn by heart. They do this by imitating the language structures and, when familiar, use them to innovate their own creative, independent writing.



  • From the very first days in the school the children follow a mark-making curriculum designed to develop their early writing skills. This lays the foundation for confident writers in the future.

  • Children participate in activities like carpet drama which link into Pie Corbett’s ‘Talk for Writing’.



  • In KS1 and KS2 the children complete a poetry, fiction and non-fiction unit each half term. Throughout the unit the children are taught the relevant writing skills for each genre, which culminates in an independent piece of writing.

  • Throughout the unit oral composition, proof reading, editing, peer assessment and presentation is developed.

  • Our creative curriculum is central to our writing programme. Children become engaged in writing for a purpose, through imaginative topics. Please see the ‘Wider Curriculum’ tab for specific information.

Phonics at George Carey


Early Years

  • The children’s learning is built on a foundation of rhyme, alliteration, rhythm and many more sound identification games

  • They learn phoneme and grapheme correspondences every day through a multi-sensory approach which includes actions, songs and games (Jolly Phonics).

  • Word and simple sentence level skills are taught systematically and progressively ensuring that all children can access the mechanics of reading in a fun and structured way (Letters and Sounds Phase 2-3)


  • Phonics is taught daily building on the skills acquired in the early years, moving the children onto a higher level of word and sentence understanding (Letters and Sounds Phase 4-6)

  • They begin to investigate alternative ways to spell a unit of sound e.g. ay, ai, eigh

  • The children begin to make links with their phonic learning across the curriculum, particularly in spoken language and grammar. For example they explore how root words are affected by different tenses or what happens when the singular changes to the plural.

  • George Carey subscribes to a phonic programme called ‘Phonic Bug’. It provides the children with access to interactive computer games designed to develop the phonic skills within the phase they are working at.


Handwriting at George Carey



  • Children are learning the statutory handwriting statutory requirements for the National Curriculum

  • George Carey follows the Nelson Handwriting scheme.

  • Handwriting is an essential at George Carey and children practice daily – taking pride in the presentation of their work.
